Android TV Digital Signage: The Complete Setup Guide

Android TV is the most common way to run digital signage in 2026 — cheap, capable and everywhere. Here is the full setup, including the device settings that cause 90% of "my screen went blank" tickets.

Android TV is the most common way to run digital signage in 2026, and it is not close. A device that costs less than the bracket it hangs behind will drive a 4K display all day, relaunch itself after a power cut, and cache enough media to survive a network outage. For most businesses it is the correct answer.

It is also the platform that generates the most "my screen went blank" support tickets, and almost every one of them comes down to the same handful of device settings that nobody changed during setup. This guide covers the whole process — choosing hardware, installing, pairing, and specifically the settings that cause the failures.

Why Android TV became the default signage player

Three reasons, in order of importance.

Cost. A capable Android TV box is $50–$120. A purpose-built commercial signage player with equivalent specifications is $300–$800. At ten screens that difference buys you two more displays.

Replaceability. When a proprietary player fails, you raise a support ticket and wait for a shipment. When an Android TV box fails, someone buys another one locally, pairs it with a code and the screen is back within the hour. For a distributed estate this is the difference between a day of downtime and twenty minutes.

Capability. Modern Android TV silicon decodes H.265 and 4K in hardware, handles a couple of simultaneous video zones, and runs a web view competently enough for live dashboards. Ten years ago the cheap-hardware route meant accepting compromises. It largely does not now.

The trade is that Android TV devices are consumer products with consumer defaults, and consumer defaults are actively hostile to unattended 24/7 operation. Everything in the "critical settings" section below exists because of that.

Choosing the right Android TV hardware

The spec floor for reliable signage

Ignore marketing model numbers and check these five things:

  • RAM: 2 GB minimum, 4 GB if you use split-screen or 4K. This is the specification that most often causes stuttering and app restarts. A 1 GB device will run a simple image playlist and fall over on anything else.
  • Storage: 16 GB minimum, 32 GB preferred. Media is cached locally so the screen survives a network drop. A device with 8 GB of storage, half of which is the OS, cannot cache a meaningful playlist.
  • Hardware H.265/HEVC decoding. Without it, modern video is decoded in software, the CPU pins, the device heats up and playback stutters. Check the chipset, not the box.
  • Ethernet port. Worth paying for. In our experience most intermittent blank-screen reports are network problems misattributed to the player.
  • Certified Android TV or Google TV, with security updates. Uncertified boxes running a modified Android build are cheaper for a reason: no Play Store guarantees, no update path, and unpredictable behaviour around app auto-start.

Devices to avoid

Anything under about $25. The market floor is populated by boxes with overstated specifications — 4 GB RAM on the box, 1 GB in reality — and no update path. They work for a month and then start restarting.

Streaming sticks in enclosed mounts. Sticks are designed for intermittent use in open air behind a TV. Behind a flush-mounted panel with no airflow, they throttle within hours. If the mount is enclosed, use a powered box you can place where air moves. The same applies to Fire TV Sticks, which have the same physics.

Devices with no wall-power option. Anything powered from the TV's USB port loses power when the TV sleeps and boots cold every morning. Use the supplied mains adapter, always.

Installing the player

On a certified Android TV or Google TV device, install from the Play Store:

  1. From the home screen, open the Play Store.
  2. Search for your signage platform's player app. For Qmanja Signage, search "Qmanja" or install from the players page.
  3. Install, then open it.
  4. The app displays a six-character pairing code. Leave it on screen.

If your platform is not in the Play Store on that device — common on operator-locked boxes — most platforms distribute an APK you can side-load. That requires enabling installation from unknown sources, which is a setting worth turning back off afterwards on a device sitting on a shared network.

Pairing the screen to your account

Pairing exists so that nobody has to type an account password into a TV remote, which is both painful and a security problem — a credential entered on a device in a public space is a credential you have effectively published.

  1. Open your dashboard in a browser on a phone or laptop.
  2. Add a screen and enter the six-character code shown on the TV.
  3. Name it something you will recognise from a list of forty: "Camden — menu board left", not "Screen 12".
  4. Assign it to an outlet and any relevant screen groups now. Retrofitting group membership across an estate later is tedious.

The screen claims itself within a few seconds and starts playing whatever is scheduled. From here, the device is managed entirely from the dashboard — you should never need the remote again, which is the point.

The critical device settings (do not skip these)

This section is why the article exists. A correctly installed player on a device with default settings will go blank, and the cause is almost always one of the four things below.

Disable sleep, screensaver and ambient mode

There are two independent sets of timers — one in the Android device and one in the television — and both will blank your screen. It is nearly always the forgotten one.

On the Android TV device:

  • Settings → Device Preferences → Screen saver → Sleep — set to Never.
  • Settings → Device Preferences → Screen saver → Screen saver — set to Off or None.
  • On Google TV devices, also check Ambient mode and turn it off. It is a separate setting from the screensaver and it will happily replace your menu board with photographs.

On the television itself (menu names vary by manufacturer):

  • Sleep timer / auto power off — off.
  • Eco mode / energy saving / no-signal power off — off. "No signal power off" is a particularly common culprit because it triggers during the player's own restart.
  • Auto power down after N hours of no remote input — off. Many TVs ship with a four-hour version of this enabled by default, which is exactly what produces "the screen dies every afternoon".

Test it properly. The only reliable check is to leave the screen running overnight and look at it in the morning. A ten-minute test proves nothing, because the timer that will get you is usually set to four hours.

Auto-start on boot and power recovery

Power cuts happen, and a screen that comes back to the Android home screen instead of your content is functionally still down.

Three things need to be true:

  1. The TV powers on when mains power returns rather than going to standby. On most sets this is a setting; on some it is fixed. Check before you buy for a site with unreliable power.
  2. The player app relaunches on boot. A signage player app should register a boot receiver and do this itself — Qmanja's Android player does. If yours does not, that is a meaningful gap.
  3. HDMI-CEC is enabled on both devices so the player can wake the display and switch it to the right input. Manufacturers all brand CEC differently — Anynet+ on Samsung, Simplink on LG, Bravia Sync on Sony — but it is the same feature.

Then test it the only way that counts: pull the plug at the wall, wait thirty seconds, plug it back in, and time how long until content is on screen. Do this before the site goes live, not after the first outage.

Control automatic updates

An automatic update at 3am is fine. An automatic update that reboots into a "what's new" screen at 3am and leaves it there is not.

The pragmatic position: leave the signage player app on auto-update, because you want security and compatibility fixes. Turn off auto-update for everything else on the device, and turn off automatic system updates on sites where you cannot easily send someone. Under Settings → Apps → Google Play Store → Auto-update apps, restricting updates to your player app is the balance most estates settle on.

Network and firewall notes

Wired Ethernet where the building allows it. This is worth repeating because it is the single highest-impact reliability decision after disabling sleep.

If Wi-Fi is unavoidable: put the players on their own SSID or VLAN, use a static DHCP reservation per device so you can find them, and check signal strength at the mounted position with the panel installed. A metal wall bracket behind an access point path costs you more signal than people expect.

On restricted corporate networks, the player needs outbound HTTPS on 443 to your platform's endpoints and its media CDN. Ask your vendor for the domain list rather than guessing — and if the site uses a captive portal, that is a genuine blocker, because an unattended device cannot accept a portal's terms page. Get the players onto a bypass list.

Portrait mode and rotation

Android TV has no user-facing rotation setting, so portrait mounting is handled in the signage software rather than on the device: you set the screen's rotation to 90, 180 or 270 in the dashboard and the player renders accordingly.

Two practical notes. Check that your layouts adapt rather than needing a rebuild — layouts stored proportionally fit both orientations, layouts stored in fixed pixels do not. And check the panel's own specification: many consumer TVs are not rated for portrait mounting, because the heat dissipation and sometimes the panel's own structure assume landscape. Commercial displays state portrait support explicitly.

Rolling out to many screens at once

Ten screens installed one at a time takes a day. Ten screens installed with a process takes an hour.

Stage everything on a bench first. Power up all the devices in one place, run the OS updates, install the player, apply the settings, and pair them. A device that is going to fail usually fails in the first hour — far better on a bench than up a ladder.

Label physically and digitally with the same name. A sticker on the device that matches the screen name in the dashboard. Six months later, when someone says "the one by the door is stuck", you want to find it in a list without walking the building.

Create groups before you pair. Assign each screen to its outlet and role group at pairing time. Building the group structure afterwards across forty screens is an afternoon you will not get back.

Keep one configured spare per site. A pre-configured device in a drawer turns a hardware failure from a support ticket into a two-minute swap. At $50 a unit this is the cheapest insurance in the whole deployment.

Security on a shared business network

An Android TV box is a general-purpose computer with a browser, an app store and access to whatever your network can reach. Four things are worth ten minutes each.

  • Turn off installation from unknown sources after any side-loading. Leaving it on is a standing risk for no continuing benefit.
  • Put players on their own VLAN or guest network, separated from point-of-sale, back office and staff machines. Players need outbound HTTPS and nothing else — no inbound connections at all — which usually makes this an easy conversation with IT.
  • Use a business account, not a personal one. A device registered to a staff member becomes a problem the day they leave. Register one account for the estate and record where the credentials live.
  • Remove the remote from public areas. The most common "the screen is showing the wrong thing" incident is somebody pressing Home. If the device must stay reachable, a lockable enclosure is cheaper than repeat visits.

Power, energy and screen longevity

A screen running fourteen hours a day, seven days a week, is on for about 5,100 hours a year. Panel lifetime is typically rated in the tens of thousands of hours, so unnecessary running time is a straightforward waste of a capital asset — and of electricity.

Two mechanisms, and they are not the same:

Content scheduling decides what plays while the screen is on. Power scheduling decides whether the screen is on at all. You want both. A screen that sleeps at closing and wakes half an hour before opening saves roughly a third of its running hours in a typical retail or hospitality operation.

On Android TV the power schedule is usually driven from the signage platform via HDMI-CEC: the player tells the display to sleep and wake. Confirm two things during commissioning — that CEC is enabled on both devices, and that the display actually returns to the correct input on wake. A screen that wakes to an input-select menu is worse than one that never slept.

For sites with unreliable power, a small UPS on the player alone — not the display — is worth considering. It lets the player shut down cleanly and, more usefully, ride out the brief interruptions that otherwise cause a full reboot cycle several times a week.

Troubleshooting the six most common failures

Screen goes blank after a few hours. Sleep or screensaver, on the device or on the TV. Check both — it is usually the one you did not check. See the settings above.

Screen shows the Android home screen after a power cut. The app is not relaunching on boot, or the TV is returning to a different HDMI input. Check the player's auto-start behaviour and enable HDMI-CEC on both devices.

Video stutters or the app restarts. Almost always heat or RAM. Feel the device — if it is hot, move it out of the enclosure or add ventilation. If it is cool, you are out of memory: reduce the number of simultaneous video zones or move to a 4 GB device.

Content is out of date. The device is offline. It will keep playing its cache indefinitely, which is the desired behaviour and also why nobody notices. This is exactly what offline alerts are for — an email when a screen has not checked in for longer than your threshold.

Screen shows the pairing code again. The device was reset, or it was unpaired in the dashboard. Re-pair it; if it recurs, suspect a factory reset triggered by someone with the remote, and consider disabling the remote or putting the device out of reach.

Colours or scaling look wrong. The TV is applying overscan or a picture mode with heavy processing. Set the picture mode to Game or PC and set the aspect to "Just scan" / "Screen fit" / 1:1. Overscan cropping the edges of a menu board is a surprisingly common and easily missed fault.

Getting it right first time

If you do nothing else from this guide: buy a device with 2 GB of RAM and an Ethernet port, turn off sleep and screensaver on both the device and the TV, verify the screen recovers on its own after you pull the power, and keep one pre-configured spare per site. Those four things prevent the great majority of failures.
